Purification Technology

At EPAX, we have expanded our concept of purity to go beyond measuring for pollutants only and now also include oxidation parameters. Oxidation forms free radicals which can damage human cells and has been implicated in many of today’s chronic diseases. Another area of concern that we monitor are trans fats.

By including environmental pollutants, oxidation products, and trans fatty acids in our specifications, EPAX is introducing a more holistic approach to purity - one that aims for the total quality of the oil.

Mild Processing Prevents Oxidation

EPAX values for oxidation, which are reflected in peroxide values, anisidine values, totox, absorbance, oligomers and acid values, are well below those set by international regulatory standards, i.e. the European Pharmacopoeia and the GOED Voluntary Monograph. The reason why our Omega-3 fish oils have such low levels is our sourcing of high quality raw materials as well the human expertise and processing equipment.

Oxidation products are not inherently present in fish oil, but are formed if the oil is handled incorrectly. EPAX uses a manufacturing process that minimises the exposure of the oil to heat and air in order to control the quality of the end product and to ensure that it is safe for long-term human consumption. Low oxidative parameters also ensure a long shelf life.

Removal of Environmental Pollutants

In addition to a regular purification process used for the production of concentrated Omega-3 fish oils, we apply an extra, proprietary step in our processing. This enables us to remove potential organic pollutants, trace metals and brominated flame retardants. All our Omega-3 fish oils undergo this purification process.

The end result is Omega-3 fish oils with the lowest product specification limits in the industry. We guarantee that we meet or exceed all known purity standards and that we are in compliance with the GOED Voluntary Monograph and relevant EU legislation.

Stability

Omega-3 fish oils are naturally unstable when exposed to oxygen, high temperatures and light. The end quality therefore depends on both careful handling of the raw materials and the addition of antioxidants for added protection during production, storage and any subsequent processing.

Our research shows that the antioxidant formula currently used in EPAX products significantly improves the stability of the oil compared with fish oils to which no antioxidants have been added. We have nevertheless developed a new antioxidant blend to ensure even greater stability. Our new antioxidant blend increases oil stability by 50-70 per cent. Our new antioxidant formula is the result of our ongoing endeavours to produce the highest quality Omega-3 EPA/DHA fatty acids in the industry.
